The Virginia Department of Education's Training and Technical Assistance Center at Old Dominion University (T-TAC ODU) is part of a statewide network of assistance centers that are designed to improve educational opportunities and contribute to the success of children and youth with disabilities (birth-22 years).

The T-TAC centers throughout the Commonwealth share the same mission which is to increase the capacity of school personnel, service providers, and families to meet the needs of children and youth with disabilities; and to foster the state improvement goals for personnel development.

Tutorial for learning to make your own electronic books.
This thematic unit was created to accompany the Start-to-Finish version of Treasure Island by Don Johnston, Inc. Activities are presented to teach reading, math, science, history, life skills, music, art, and much more under a pirate theme. Specific ASOLs are referenced.
This curriculum unit CD has been re-designed and is ready for use in a variety of early childhood settings, from Head Start to ECSE! Built around the common Springtime theme, Growing Things, this unit features 12 instructionally rich activities that can be embedded throughout your daily instruction, along with accommodations to help include children with special needs. Activities are designed to address Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning and helpful tips and forms are included to assist you in embedding student IEP goals throughout your instruction.
This TACtic provides guidance in choosing the right assessment tools for screening for challenging behaviors.
This new CD includes information on creating and teaching thematic units. Examples of thematic units for elementary and secondary lessons are included. ASOL objectives from all four core content areas and functional domains are addressed. A printable template is included to assist with creating your own thematic units.
Provides information that your program can use in selecting the tools most appropriate to meet the needs of the children and families that you serve.
An exemplary teacher brings the audience into her classroom where she demonstrates recommended practices in early childhood. Highlighted in the video are learning centers and room arrangement, schedules and visual strategies, integrated thematic, literature based curricula and activity based instruction.
The Science ASOL Force, Motion, and Energy 2 addresses various types of movement. This brand new curriculum unit presents dozens of creative ways to introduce and reinforce these concepts. Discover new and effective ways to teach your students with intellectual disabilities about motion. Each unit includes and Activity CD full of printables, games, and much more.
An historical overview of Asperger's Syndrome is provided in this TACtic. Social, sensory, and instructional needs for students with high functioning autism are also reviewed.
This professional development module will provide Early Childhood Educators with information about the M-CHAT, a series of 23 questions to identify characteristics of autism in young children. The module also includes an updated article on diagnosing autism spectrum disorder in young children, positive behavior support strategies, information related to seven critical core skills to teach young children with autism spectrum disorders, and samples of visuals created from visual software.

This interactive session will provide information about characteristics of play in young children, birth through 5 years, who have autism spectrum disorder. Visual, Social, and Behavioral Strategies for the Student/Child with Autism

Engaging All Students in a Successful Math Journey

On a journey to achieving competency in math, students must learn to problem solve, reason, communicate and represent mathematical ideas. Attend this interactive workshop and explore research based math lessons that teach these various math processes, and will help the K-5 math SOLs come alive for struggling students! Participants will learn how to engage all students in a variety of practical problems involving whole numbers, decimals, and fractions by using manipulatives and simple representations that will keep math concepts alive in students' minds. Participants will leave this hands-on workshop with resources that have been created especially for this session such as: word problems, sorting and other interactive activities, internet links, formative assessment strategies and simple project ideas that will make the journey through learning the Virginia K-5 Math Standards fun and engaging for your students.
Collaboration in the Preschool Classroom

Sometimes referred to as an "arranged marriage", the partnership between a teacher and paraprofessional is important for a positive and productive classroom climate. This session will offer tried-and-true methods for enhancing the working relationship between paraprofessionals and teachers. Examples of techniques to be discussed include daily communication, weekly conferencing, shared input of classroom planning, and shared data collection.
