Ever wondered, what is Assistive Technology (AT)? Can I get it for my students? Well, basically the answer is yes for students with an IEP. But what is Assistive Technology and how does my student get it?
First, Assistive Technology is considered a device or a service. An AT device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. An AT service is any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device. [34 CFR §300.5]
How does your student get it? The IEP team is tasked with determining if the student needs Assistive Technology for a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). The AT Network website has information to assist IEP Teams with determining the AT device or service the student needs.
