Resources to Support the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning

Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, all public divisions and schools across the commonwealth will implement the revised 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOLs). Resources are currently being developed to support the implementation of the revised standards, some of which are detailed below.

VDOE Resources for Transitioning to the Newly Adopted Standards

The VDOE’s 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning page provides several resources for transitioning to the revised standards, including:

  • 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning K-12
  • 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning—Overview of Revisions

VDOE Resources to Support Mathematics Instruction

The VDOE’s 2023 Mathematics Instructional Resources page provides teachers with resources to support the implementation of the 2023 Mathematics SOLs. Organized by grade level or course, these resources are continually being updated, so please continue to check the site for additions:

  • Understanding the Standards: These documents replace the Understanding the Standard section previously included in grade-level curriculum frameworks, provide background information on mathematics concepts, and specify minimum content students should learn.
  • Exemplar Mathematics Instructional Plans: These sample lesson plans provide teachers with examples of instruction aligned with the 2023 Mathematics SOLs.
  • Data Cycle Resources: These resources are designed to support teachers in implementing the data cycle in their classrooms.

Additional Resources to Support Implementation of the 2023 Mathematics Standards

Math Forward VA is an all-volunteer collective of mathematics educators from across the commonwealth who have come together to design instructional resources aligned with the 2023 Mathematics SOLs. Resources for each grade level and course, through Algebra 2, on the Math Forward VA site include:

  • Scope and sequence documents
  • Standards progression documents
  • Unit guides
  • Teaching considerations for each unit
  • Concept progressions for each unit
  • Learning experiences for each unit

Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics

The Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM) 2024 annual conference has a specific strand focused on the new 2023 mathematics standards. The conference will occur June 17-18, 2024, in Williamsburg, VA. Please visit VCTM’s website for additional conference strand and registration information.
