Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) About: AAC refers to all of the different ways that someone communicates besides talking. Augmentative = to add to someone’s speech Alternatives = to be used instead of speech No-tech & Low-tech: Examples: writing drawing spelling words by pointing to letters pointing to photos, pictures, or written words gestures and facial expressions High-tech: Examples: using an app on iPad or tablet to communicate using a computer with a “voice” (sometimes called “speech-generating” device) Connect with the SLP assigned to your school or school district. Finding and implementing the right tool is a team effort. Myth: Children must be at a certain age before they use AAC. Fact: AAC helps people of all ages and can be used at an early age (even under 3 years old). No milestone must be reached before using AAC. Myth: Using AAC will prevent someone from developing language. Fact: AAC can actually help with language development. It also can support learning to read and write!
