Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! A new school year means updates are available in the area of mathematics. Below are a few that are noteworthy.

**NEW** 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning

The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning were approved by the Virginia Board of Education on August 31, 2023 and will be fully implemented during the 2024-2025 school year.

In preparation for full implementation of the 2023 standards, school divisions have three transition options for the 2023-2024 school year:

Option 1:
Full Crosswalk Year
Instruction in both the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning and the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning
Option 2:
Partial Crosswalk Year
Instruction in the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning with choices for prioritization of key content from the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning
Option 3:
2016 Standard Focus
Instruction focused solely on the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning

Note: The Mathematics Standards of Learning tests during the 2023-2024 school year will assess the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning.

More information on options for transition can be found in this slide deck from the VDOE’s September 21,2023 Transitioning to the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning webinar.

For more information on the 2023 mathematics standards, upcoming webinars, and resources, visit the VDOE’s 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning webpage.
