Educational Podcasts for Summer Professional Learning

Congratulations on wrapping up another successful school year!  Soon you will be enjoying a family vacation or perhaps some well-deserved quiet time at home.  At some point, you will begin thinking about new teaching ideas for the next school year.  You might read some teacher journals or sign up for a summer webinar series.  Another option is to listen to educational podcasts.

Podcasts are talk radio shows that you can listen to on demand.  They offer a convenient way to fit professional learning into your busy schedule.  You can listen in your car, on a plane, or at the beach. Since it is relatively easy and inexpensive to produce a quality podcast, there are thousands of options.  Below are a few popular and engaging podcasts for educators.  Some are specific to special education, while others offer a more general approach to teaching strategies.

The 10-Minute Teacher Podcast offers a wide range of teaching strategies and ideas in a short amount of time.  Many of the episodes feature brief interviews with amazing teachers from across the country.  Topics include motivating students, using educational technology, classroom organization, and much more.

The Truth for Teachers is a weekly podcast hosted by an instructional coach.  Episodes focus on teaching students with disabilities, with attention given to communication, lesson planning, and differentiating instruction.  Practical ideas are presented in a sincere and engaging way.  Listeners are encouraged to interact with the podcast by submitting questions and comments that may be featured in future episodes.

Special education teachers can receive tips, tricks, and research-based strategies from the Resource Room Podcast.  The host devotes a great amount of time to academic content instruction with ideas for improving decoding, reading comprehension, and math computation.  You will also find a lot of episodes devoted to writing IEPs and leading successful IEP meetings.

The Cult of Pedagogy is all about sharing effective teaching strategies in an engaging way.  There is great content for educators of all grade levels and content areas. This podcast is hosted by a lifelong educator who presents innovative ideas through interviews with teachers, administrators, students, and parents.  Many episodes focus on instructional strategies that will appeal to special educators.

If you are looking for content devoted to student engagement and hands-on learning ideas, you will enjoy the Not So Wimpy Teacher Podcast.  This podcast is produced to help busy teachers learn practical and innovative strategies.  Individual episodes focus on ideas for reading, writing, and math instruction.
