#3 Formative Assessments
Formative assessment is an evidence-based practice that allows teachers to gather low-stakes information, or data, to monitor students’ learning. In doing so, they can use this information to adjust their instruction to increase understanding and achievement. A critical element of formative assessment is providing timely, specific feedback to benefit students. There are a wide variety of ways to conduct formative assessment (Thomas, 2019) to include strategies such as questioning, class discussions, quizzes, exit slips, peer assessments, and observation of student work. Unlike summative assessments, which are typically high stake and provide end-of-unit or course evaluation, formative assessments are used in real-time, so educators can identify misunderstandings, address gaps in student learning and further personalize the instruction. Effective formative assessment fosters a student-centered learning environment, promotes self-regulation, and improves overall educational outcomes. Check out video module #6 on formative assessment, and the accompanying one-pager to improve the use of this evidence-based practice.
