Are you wondering how you can get a running start this summer on your personal professional learning as we are all gearing up for the official launch of the Virginia Literacy Act? Even though we know professional development is already built into division plans in relation to evidence-based literacy instruction and utilizing high quality instructional materials for the 2024-2025 school year, here are some additional resources to help you take charge of your own learning in order to feel more prepared:
VDOE’s Virginia Literacy Act
Familiarize yourself with the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA). Virginia is taking the lead nationwide to improve early literacy outcomes. Through the VLA, the Virginia Department of Education supports school divisions with tools and resources to ensure every teacher will have training in evidence-based literacy instruction. The latest Virginia Literacy Update provides a comprehensive overview of what to expect.
Virginia Literacy Partnership’s Value Series
Learn about topics grounded in science-based reading research for grades K-3. In alignment with VLA, this series scaffolds learning about each topic by presenting short introductory videos, infographics, recorded webinars, instructional resources, and readings for each of the key components of effective literacy instruction. Additional topics for the NEW Value Series Grades 4-8 are coming soon!
The Reading League Virginia
Become a member with TRL-VA. Their mantra says, “sharing knowledge – inspiring change. All children deserve to learn to read, and all teachers can learn to teach them”. In honor of VLA, membership is free for the upcoming year and will grant you access to events and resources as well as opportunities to network with other Virginia educators. Registration for their July 20, 2024 VLA Kick-Off event is open to all with both in-person and virtual options available.
